Lewis the Koala was heroically rescued by a woman from the Australian wildfires in 2019.

He was found severely burned and dehydrated, clinging desperately to a tree in the middle of a flaming bushland. Despite receiving the best care available, Lewis did not survive.

In the bushfires of 2019-2020, known as the "Black Summer," an estimated 3 Billion animals were killed or injured. The Australian government declared the koala as endangered by extinction in 2022.

Lewis's story was widely reported in the media and he became a symbol of the impact of climate change on wildlife around the world.
